Unusually Great Desktop Clocks

posted in For The Office, Geeky |

Work always seems to drag by incredibly slow…especially when it gets down to that last hour. I find myself buying endless supplies of sticky notes to cover up the time on my monitor just so it “seems” like it is going by faster. I’m sure most of you know what I am talking about. So here’s a list of unusually great clocks to clutter up your desk at work. Who knows? Some of these are so crazy…they may actually pass the time!

Puzzle Cube Alarm Clock

The 80’s saw many trends come and go – our favorite, of course, was legwarmers, but coming in a close second were those colorful cubic twisty puzzles that boggled our minds. Remember solving them with a screwdriver? Yeah, we did that, too. We won’t tell if you don’t. Since we live the cube, it’s time to BE the cube. Our desktops will show our love for the venerable puzzle from the days of Duran Duran. The LCD display of this unique clock shows the time, sure, but give the top-row a twist, and you can switch the display between the Alarm, Calendar, and even the Temperature settings!

Matrix Cube Alarm Clock

Finally an alarm clock that has a techie feel to it, yet is also stylish! The Matrix Cube Clock is connected by thin ribbon cables. Each clock module can be stacked vertically, horizontally or in a pyramid, depending on your mood and the alignment of Jupiter and Saturn’s moons.

Will Return Clock

How annoying is it to rush up to a department head to sign your expense report only to find them out to lunch with a “Will Return” sign on their door? Or you run out on your short lunch break to pick up the dry cleaning you need for an important dinner engagement, only to see a “Will Return” sign on the door? Other people’s lives sometimes just seem to only be about inconveniencing you. We understand. But, cheer up – it’s time for revenge! Just post the Will Return Clock on your office door or near your cubicle. Anyone coming to meet you will see the sign and know you’re out, and they will wait for your return based on the time posted. But then they will notice that the time displayed is right now, and you’re not back yet. So they’ll leave, give you fifteen minutes, and come back. But now the time has changed. See? It’s brilliant; you’ll confuse and amuse everyone. And if you do happen to be at your desk and someone asks you something, just point to the clock and keep on working. You’ll be back soon.

Exposed Flip Clock

This clock is unique in that its mechanism is exposed for all to see. Notice how the plates rotate against a bent metal finger that releases them only when it is the next plate’s turn to fall. Watch the curious dance – the harmony of motors and gears. See, originally this clock had a case covering it, but through a happy accident, it was forgotten. It looks even cooler the way it is, so there you have it.

TIX Led Clock

Patterns can be found everywhere in life. In our DNA, in cloud formations, during a chess game, in your code, in your deviant behaviors, and even in your bottle of Bawls. Patterns give us clues. Clues give us information. Information makes the world a happier place (not necessarily a safer happier place though). In the case of the Tix clock, the patterns can give you the time. Millions of patterns are possible with the futuristic-looking Tix clock, yet the clock is extremely simple to read once you grasp the basic concept. The four seperate fields act like the four digits of a digital clock. The value of each digit is simply the number of illuminated squares in each field. So any given time of the day may have thousands of different ways of displaying the time. The clocks in the image are displaying the time 12:34. It’s that easy! Of course your friends are just going to take a look at your Tix clock and think it’s just modern LED art. Dullards… Please note that the image to your left shows the clock static. However, you can set your Tix clock to update every second so that you end up with a constantly evolving change of patterns that reveals to you the time.

Water Powered Clock

The water clock will display the time and date in clear easy to read numbers just moments after you fill the liquid reservoirs in the back with the liquid of your choice. We’ve had ours running for weeks so far and the water levels have barely descended and we haven’t had to refill it at all. How does it work? Magic mostly. And a little bit of science too. The internal converter simply extracts electrons from water (or other liquid) molecules and provides a steady stream of electrical current acting as a fuel cell to generate power to the clock. Attractively packaged with translucent blue siding and a mirrored front. You can even use the water reservoirs on the back to hold flowers!
