I bought this as a Christmas present for my dad. He recently bought a new house and is getting a new BBQ to go with it. Him being the dad that he is, opened it up, complimented the carrying case, and then inspected each one. He loved the sturdiness and how well everything was made and couldn’t wait to use it! He currently has it in a cabinet in the kitchen until he gets his BBQ in, but based on his initial reactions, he thinks everything will hold up and well and work great.

This is a fairly complete BBQ toolset. It comes jam-packed into an aluminum attache style case. The case’s walls are very thin, but they seem to stand up to all of the corner rivets an’d can tolerate a decent amount of compression resistance from the fully stuffed contents.

The tongs, fork, swiss army spatula and knife are made from stamped 304 stainless steel, with wood like handles and are suitably of reach-over-the-coals BBQ length. 304 is a decently durable steel, but the stamping work on my swiss army spatula looks a little rough on the leading edge. I can grind/buff that out. I don’t want a razor edge, but I also don’t want burrs.

The apron looks like it can protect against hot liquids, as well as accidental frontal grill touches. The pair of silicon grilling gloves might get a little sweaty on the hands, but they will definitely protect against hot liquid spills, which woven Nomex gloves just don’t do. The basting brush is more than decent, although I really wish it wasn’t black, for cleaning and food safety reasons, between uses.

The Achilles heel here, though, is the mass-produced, variously re-branded, TP101 allegedly instant-read thermometer, which has a 9 inch reach. The required LR44 battery is already inserted.

Many problems with the TP101. First, there are no operating instructions included. Second, there seems to be no way at all to calibrate the device. Third, consistent reading accuracy just isn’t there. You can sample the same spot, multiple times, and not get the same reading twice. Fourth, it takes a while for an “instant read” to settle down on a final number. Sometimes, as much as a minute. This is the slowest of all the digital instant-read thermometers that I have ever used. Without calibration, out-of-the-box, my TP101 inconsistently reads anywhere from 3°F warmer than actual, at best, and as much as 10°F warmer than actual. These errors and inconsistencies risk food safety, and that’s just not right. Especially, not for a “prestige” gift. So, the wow factor of an included, instant-read digital thermometer is greatly diminished. With only a LR44 for power, it’s too much to ask for a display backlight. For twilight and night ‘Q-ing, you should really be wearing an headlamp, anyway.

Trying to get everything back into the case, after they’ve been removed, is like origami. The hard tools all go where they have to go, but the apron and the silicon mits won’t all fit in with the rest, unless you carefully refold the apron, exactly as it first was, and roll out all of the air, so that it is completely flat and compressed. Even then, you might still need to forcibly crunch down on the bulging case, in order to finally close the latches.

Again, the sincerity is front and center. If all of my concerns, as mentioned above, are all corrected, this could be a near perfect grilling present. Right now, it isn’t quite that.

I can only recommend this to others in the scenario where there is already a reliable and accurate instant-read thermometer in the house. Otherwise, don’t buy this kit for that. The TP101 is JUNK.

While this item is intended to be a gift for that Dad in your life who is king of the grill it makes an excellent gift for anyone on your gift list that takes pride in their grilling skills. I bought this one for myself to be honest, it looked so nice. It comes with the basics of Tongs, Fork and Spatula but then it also includes a nice carving knife, a brush for applying your favorite grilling sauces, a digital meat thermometer, a pair of silicon gloves for when you need to handle the hot stuff without burning your hands and finally a nice grill apron to protect your clothes from splatter. All in a stylish aluminum case so you can carry your tools of the trade like the pro you are. The spatula is worth noting that it has a built in bottle opener and along one edge it serves as a serrated knife for cutting and on the other side the edge is designed os it can also be used as a meat tenderizor. The metal parts of the tools are made of 304
Food Grade Stainless Steel. The handles of all the tools are made of a heat resistant material made to look like finely stained and polished wood, to prevent the tools from getting too hot to handle. The only thing about giving this gift to someone who is not your Father is that cut into the spatula are the words “Best Dad” and on the aprom it reads “Dad, King of the Grill” so they’ll need to be able to ignore that, just tell them it’s a term of respect.

The overall set is very nice. The case, gloves and thermometer where worth the purchase alone. We keep our grilling tools outside and when we want to cook, they always need to checked and wiped down before using. The case keeps everything just as you put it away. The gloves work perfect for taking tin pans off the grill and the thermometer is an essential for any grille. The spatula was smaller in length then I expected, as well as the tongs, they work fine, just that when reaching to the back of the grill, your hand will heat up. The knife was an added bonus to keep by the grilling area. Great set and worth the purchase.

This is really a well-thought out grilling set. It has a spatula, knife, fork, apron, gloves, and thermometer. All packaged in a compact metal box. It is hard to believe but everything fits. The quality seems very good as well. The spatula has multiple uses in that it is also sharp and has a serrated edge and can even open bottles. The only issue I have is that it is exclusively marketed as a gift for DAD. The apron says Dad-King of the Grill. The spatula has “Best Dad” stamped out of the body of the grill. Clearly, a gift for Dad. The online pictures show this. Unfortunately, I got this as a present for my SON to go along with the new barbecue grill, I got him for the holidays. My “bad” as they say. Oh well, my two-year-old grandson can give this to him as the accessory gift. Very good grilling set. Just pay more attention to the description.
